Tail of the Dragon-A biker article
Designated US 129, “The Dragon” is a stretch of road crossing the Tennessee / North Carolina state line and considered by many as one of the world’s foremost motorcycling roads. It is a mountainous 11-mile stretch of pavement with 318 curves with steep drop-offs by the edge of the pavement. Its jagged contours have earned it the nickname “tail of the dragon” or “The Dragon” since 1981 because its curves are said to resemble a dragon’s tail. This stretch of road bears the street name “Tapoco Road” in North Carolina and “Calderwood Highway” in Tennessee and is signed entirely by US129. Just a small portion of US129 makes up The Dragon
