HOG Batemans Bay Weekend November 28 – 29, 2020
Due to current Covid restrictions, the ride group for this trip was limited to 30 people and was
accessible to all Chapter members.
Saturday: Our ride end point for Saturday is Batemans Bay, some 330 km from our start point. To
get there, rather than taking the coastal route we go inland via Campbelltown, Bargo, Mittagong,
Robertson, Kangaroo Valley, Berry, Shoalhaven Heads, Coolangatta, Bomaderry and Nowra. Then we
get onto the coastal road (Princes Highway) to Batemans Bay via Falls Creek, Conjola and Ulladulla.
That’s a rather convoluted way to get to Batemans Bay but it’s a biker indulgent route. Along the
way we stop off at Robertson and Shoalhaven Heads to minimize fatigue and refresh ourselves. The
predicted weather is for extreme conditions with temperatures exceeding 40 0 C as predicted many
days ago which is 18 – 20 0 C above average for this time of year!
These conditions will blanket much of the east coast of Australia so there will be no escaping it. Our ride planners could not have
foreseen these conditions and regardless, the ride goes ahead!
Our stay at Batemans Bay is really just a rest stop before continuing on our adventures with our
‘destination’ really being the whole route. If this was a car trip you would say your destination was
Batemans Bay and you would go straight there, but on a bike trip, it’s the journey, not the
Sunday: This is our return trip taking us a different way home on the inland route via Braidwood and through the Sutton Forest where we have refreshment stops. Again, the predicted weather is for sustained extreme conditions but with additional damaging winds gusting up to 100 km / hr. That’s not what we ordered!
